Time quickly jumped from my last post in November to now, the end of February. I'm sure there are plenty of events and newsworthy things I could have posted, but somehow they went by the wayside.
I should mention that Phil and Tom won the first CAT ll which was held in Naples in January. They started the year right where they left off last year. Phil and Tom ended 2017 as the #1 ranked team in the US. Not too shabby!
The current event is that Phil is in St. Pete playing a big CAT ll national. The big twist is he is playing doubles and....wait for it....wait for it.....SINGLES!! I am so proud of him for getting back on the horse with singles. The last year and a half, Phil has played strictly doubles (and done very well). But good for him for wanting to get back on the singles court and put himself out there again.
He is just using this tournament as a barometer of where he might even be at this point. His expectations are low...not that he doesn't want to win, but just not putting too much pressure on himself to do so. Match play, at every level of the game, is so important at this stage.
He and Tom won their first doubles match easily yesterday and had the day off of doubles today. Phil had his singles match this afternoon at 2:00. He call around 2:30 to let me know the matches were running behind. Thankfully I had such a busy afternoon at work that I didn't have time to fret over his outcome. Yes, nothing like a 3.0 ladies league match with high drama to take your mind off the worst of your problems. I swear. I've never seen anything like it my life. But I'll save that story for another day.
I was at my art drawing class when Phil called to say he had won 6-1, 6-2. He said he felt sluggish, breathless and not in great shape to play singles. I feel like just by getting that first match under his belt and enduring a little nervousness will now help him play better in the matches to come.
Tomorrow he will play singles in the morning and doubles in the afternoon. I will be busy teaching in the morning therefore I won't have time to watch the hands on the clock slowly move, minute by minute, as I await his call.
