The last two or three times Phil has played this tournament in Atlanta, he and Tom have been the very last match on to play...and I do mean last of the whole tournament, at the very end of the very last day. Which means going on around 6 pm, finishing after 8 pm and then being stuck trying to catch, or cancel flights to get back home. Always a nightmare. One of the reasons this has not been one of his favorite tournaments to go to.
The curse is broken. Phil and Tom played their final this morning around 11:00. And of course, you know me by now, when I hadn't heard from him by 1:00 my nerves set in. He called around 1:20 and they won in three sets. The first two sets were very close....lost the first 7-5, won the second 7-6, then went on to win the third 6-1. Whew. Glad to have this one in the books. They needed this tournament for points and they needed it for matches and got both.
Remembering his match finishing time history, I originally made his return flight home on the latest flight out. I just changed him to an earlier flight, and he'll be landing at 7:15 instead of 10:45 tonight. He's on the way to the airport now, and we're both (Ellie and me!) eager for him to come home. Early departures are always a good thing...especially when you win!
