Not knowing what the practice court availability would be, we got up early to be at the courts around 8:00 this morning. Matches weren't starting until 9:00, so we were able to get a good half hour warm up in.
Phil's match went on as scheduled at 11:00, and he had a pretty routine win of 6-1, 6-1. I thought he hit the ball well, but he says he didn't feel so. I completely understand what he is saying though. First round match jitters can be tricky, and even though you feel like you are going to win, occasionally you spray balls around the court and wonder what the heck is going on! His opponent was erratic, so it was tough for Phil to get into a rhythm.
Tomorrows match will be against a feisty and fiery player that Phil has beaten before. He knows he'll be in for a mental battle, as well as physical. He'll have to play well, stay focused and not let Wesley get away with any of his shenanigans (a nice way of saying he calls the ball close).
Doubles will also start tomorrow for Phil and Geoff. They're out practicing now, then we'll grab an early dinner and call it a day. I could get used to this life of leisure!
