Phil played an opponent today whose style is a tough match up for Phil's game. Wesley plays with little to no pace, and scampers around the court like a little jack rabbit. Phil needed to played focused and not get too soft with his shots....which he executed perfectly. Phil was up 6-3, 5-2 with a couple of match points on Wesley's serve. He wasn't able to close it out, but no problem, Phil was serving well and could serve it out...not so fast. Wesley is pesky and broke Phil. After being down 40-15, Phil was able to come back in the game to break Wesley and win the second set 6-4. My nerves were shot. I try not to show emotion outwardly, but holy cow, my insides are churning when he plays...no matter what the score!
Phil and Geoff looked very good in their doubles this afternoon, winning easily 6-1, 6-0. They'll have a tougher match in the semis tomorrow. Phil will now play Tom Smith tomorrow in one of the semis and Geoff will play Fred Robinson in the other.
Today was a big day for Phil to get through. I see him getting more confident with each ball he hits.
