For some reason I haven't had time to keep up with my blogging this trip. Our days are full either playing or watching, then by the time evening hits, it's time to shower, eat, fall into bed and start all over. So here's a quick synopsis of the week so far....
Wednesday:
I arrived in San Antonio mid day, picked up by teammates and went straight to the courts to watch the 55's Florida team finish their matches. I got a quick hit with some of my teammates, then went on to the captain's meeting where the draws were made. Of the eleven USTA sections represented, we were not one of the top 4 seeds. On luck ( bad luck) of the draw, we are set up to play #2 seed Texas the next day. Although a seemingly bad draw for us, we knew Texas was more worried about playing us then we were playing them.
Thursday:
Cloudy, cold morning, we warmed up early for our 9:30 match. I was playing #3 singles, and would be playing Kathy Vick, who I have lost to not once, not twice, but three times this year. Our #1 & 3 players had tough matches to play as well. Brenda lost at 2 in straight sets, and both Jenny (#1) and I went well into three hours in our three set matches. Jenny lost a heartbreaker 7-6 in the third, and I was able to pull out a win against Kathy, 6-4 in the third. Nobody beats me four times in a row! :-)
So we're going into doubles down 2-1 in matches. Jenny and I played Kathy and Vicky Buholtz, who just won the clay court nationals in West Palm a few weeks ago. We had never played together before, but were both fired up to win. Our styles meshed well together and we dominated the match winning 6-3, 6-2. It was a great win for us. Now it was down to our #2 doubles to clinch the win for us. Terrie and Brenda split, and the third set went to a tiebreaker. Team Florida won! It was an awesome.
Fortunately for all of us we had a day off on Friday. Our bodies were beaten up and sore from the tough matches, on hard courts the day before. Jenny and I did get up early to get a light hit in before watching the 35's Florida team play, and scout our opponents for Friday. We were to play the winner of Northern Cal and Mid Atlantic. Northern Cal won, and we were happy to know we had a fighting chance.
Saturday:
The sun finally shone in full force today, a welcome sight from the gloomy, cool gray that had been hanging around all week. Jenny had toenail issues, Brenda had Achilles issues and I had a high rib issue, but we were hoping for the best. Jenny lost her match in a third set tiebreaker, and had to call the trainer to treat cramping at the end of her match. Brenda called the trainer out to tape her heel in her match. I played an entire three set match without a forehand again, and grimaced every time my left arm went up over my head to serve. We all lost, but went down fighting hard and never gave up.
So now we play off for third and fourth tomorrow against Southern who lost to Southern Cal today. We'll do our best with what we have left and see what happens. It's been a fun week in San Antonio, but I'm ready to get home!
