We played our playoff match against Southern today. We were definitely the walking wounded. Jenny played a set and had to retire at #1 singles. Brenda, hobbling on a bad foot, lost at #2, and I struggled through a three set match with a severe high rib pull and no forehand, to lose at #3. With the singles decided we debated on even playing the doubles. Southern wasn't keen on playing, but we didn't want to be the ones to default the remaining two matches. We would have accepted a default, but we weren't going to agree to us defaulting. We still had some sense of pride left.
Jenny and I played a great first set against Sue Webb and Sue Bartlett. We ended up losing it in a close tiebreaker. At about 5-5 in games Jenny's groin cramped again on a high reaching ball. Without her being able to move and me not being able to reach, we decided then to stop the match after the first set. Terri and Brenda lost their doubles too. We gave it the ol' college try but it just wasn't there. We finished fourth out of eleven teams. We weren't even seeded to begin with, so we were pleased with our outcome.
In retrospect, we all played so hard the first day against Texas and in that sweet victory we all seemed to have left it all on the court, and didn't have much to give for later matches. My fitness level is as good as it's ever been. I came into this event with a nagging injury from West Palm a couple of weeks ago. None of that has anything to do with my inability to play singles confidently. I don't know that I'll be playing anymore singles again...at least for a while. I have full confidence in doubles, so for now I'll concentrate on improving my double skills. Phil and I have set a goal to win the upcoming national husband/wife tournament in Palm Springs in March.
I reacquainted with old friends and made new ones on this trip. Something positive to take home from this week in San Antonio.

Really enjoyed reading yer blog. Just got the URL from Janet Cork. She and John are back living here at The Landings in Savannah after being away for twenty odd years. John and I do some scuba diving together down in West Palm.
