Phil is playing the last event of the year in Longboat Key this week. It's only a couple of hours north of here, but just far enough that he needs to stay, rather than try driving back and forth.
This is a cat ll national. If he does well, it will help him points wise with the year end rankings. Because he missed most of 2011 with his shoulder surgery, his ranking dropped down to the 100's. He has worked really hard this year and done well enough to now be in the top 6 or 7.
Yesterday's first round was a routine win of 6-2, 6-0. Today's quarterfinal match was much tougher. He won the first set playing well, and was up 2-0 in the second, before things started changing. Not being able to convert on a couple of key break point chances, and losing his own serve, cost him the second set. Phil went up 5-2 in the third, then held on for a 6-4 win.
Tomorrow he plays John Mayotte, brother of former tour player Tim Mayotte. Word is he's a big hitter, with a steady backhand, and a forehand that is more prone to errors. Phil tends to rise to the occasion when he knows he's in for a battle. I wish I could be there to watch!
