Today's match was an important one for Phil. He needed to see improvement in his play and mental state. Every match this week he played a little better, although he is no where near where he wants to be. He showed a lot of fight and spirit in his play today against Padge Bolton. From my perspective Phil served much better, attacked when he could, forcing Padge to make passing shots. Padge may have made more errors than usual, but I give Phil credit for forcing the errors. Phil doesn't quite feel the way I do about the match, but is pleased with the win and will finally admit to doing some things well. The scores were a close 6-4, 7-5.
Normally I am a nervous wreck during these tight (actually all) matches. Fortunately my good friend, teammate and roommate from Alabama, Bari Blake, came to watch Phil play. Chatting with her throughout the match helped calmed my nerves. It was awesome to see her and catch up on the past 6 years since we've seen each other.
We're on the plane now heading home. Both of us are ready to get back. I've got this week to gear up and prepare to leave Saturday for La Jolla. After watching great tennis all week I'm ready to play myself.
I think we're both finally moving in the right direction.
