Win in the Wind

During the wee hours of the morning I kept hearing the howling winds outside. I was hoping they would die down by daylight and we'd have perfect conditions to play in today. Not quite. The winds continued to blow through the morning and along with the wind were much cooler temps.

Phil and I had a good warmup prior to our match. There is a massage therapist on site, and Phil has been using him to get a good pre match stretch each day. It really helps to get his shoulder loosened up and ready to play. With the winds gusting to near 30 mph we knew it would be important to keep our feet moving and to play smart, straight up doubles. We did both. There were quite a few breaks in the first set, but we were able to hold Phil's serve to win the set 6-4. The winds started to ease up, and we quickly took control to go up 5-2. We had match points on Phil's serve, but couldn't close it out. We returned well in the next game and won the second set 6-3. We were happy to get out of the wind blown match with a win. We are starting to blend well together as a team. With each match our confidence grows.

One good thing about playing early is that we're done early and have the rest of the day to do whatever we want. This afternoon we went to see the first round women's matches at Indian Wells. What we enjoyed the most was watching the practice courts. Today we saw Stosur, Janckovic, Hanchokova, Ferrer, Nalbandian, Murray, Haas, and many more. Indian Wells is a great venue to watch the pros because of how up close and personal you can get with the players. We hope to be back on Saturday to catch a few more matches. We fly out on a red eye Saturday night.

Our semifinal match tomorrow will be tough. We play a good team from southern Cal, and we'll have to be sharp and focused. The forecast for tomorrow is warmer temps and lighter winds. We'll be ready.
