Going for the Gold

The day didn't start out with the best of omens. We had our normal routine this morning that we've had the past three days..up early, check the weather (NO WIND!!), warm up on the same hard court, then Phil has the trainer do a pre match stretch to get his shoulder loosened up. I play a few words on Words With Friends to relax and get ready for a our match.

Our match is called and we go out to play...as we're finishing our warmup and taking our serves, Phil looks at me in a panic, and says "my ring...my ring is gone"! Of course he's talking about his wedding ring. I immediately said, it's ok, it's only a ring, we can look for it later. The restroom was the last place he had been before going on the court, and in my mind I thought it might have slipped off while drying his hands...or it could really be just about anywhere. I told him again it was just a ring and it was no big deal...I certainly didn't want him distracted throughout the match, nor did I want him to think I was upset about it....which I wasn't. Out of sight out of mind.
Frank and Kim Zebot are a good team. We all held serve the first four games of the match, then we were able to break Frank to go up 3-2. We played well the remainder of the set and won it 6-2. They continued to play well, and we had some great points. We were on serve at 3-4, with me serving and we go down 15-40. I came up with some good serves and we were able to hold my serve, then break Frank again to have Phil serving for the match at 5-4. Down love thirty, Phil hit a couple big serves, and had great volleys to get us our first match point. I was so happy to see Kim's return of serve float long to give us a spot in our first husband/wife national final! Not once did either of us think of the lost ring...we kept our concentration on the task at hand. Afterwards we searched the trash can in the bathroom, and retraced Phil's steps, but to no avail. It is no big deal, the ring can certainly be replaced.

Now we turn our sights onto tomorrow. We play a very good team in Brent and Mai Abel. They are playing well, and we will have to play smart tennis to beat them. Phil and I like the way we are coming together as a doubles team. We came here to have fun, compete well, and to win. If we win a gold ball tomorrow, maybe we'll turn it into a new wedding ring for Phil!

Meet my new best friend "Jas", short for Jasmine....sweetest angel ever! She's training to be a service dog.

win today in the finals!! Poor baby with the ring loss - Phil may remember Glen lost his a few weeks
ago too - and acted like the world came to an end. But fortunately his daughter found it on the bathroom floor - it may still come up but he always has your heart!! Enjoy Indian Wells tomorrow and safe journey back to paradise - Linda & Glen
