One Match Down

Phil finally played his first match today. He wasn't at all pleased with how he played, but he did win 4 and 4. The weather was breezy and balmy, and he said he felt flat...couldn't quite get the adrenaline going. Hopefully that was just getting his first match out of the way and now he'll be ready to play tomorrow. The matches will only get tougher from here on out. He and Larry also have a doubles match tomorrow. I think the other guys from here, Chip and Evert, won their matches, but David lost his. It sounds like they're having a great time all hanging out together. It's kind of neat that all the guys from here that practice and work out together are down there playing and hanging out together. Everyone seems to be motivating each other, which makes everyone a better player and competitor.

Work has been especially busy and hectic as our season starts to wind down. Our winter guest tennis family has been dealt a tragic blow, when we learned that Lefty and Nan Wright's twelve year old grandson, Teddy took his own life on Monday. He was an amazingly brilliant young man, who had just finished composing, yes I said composing, an orchestra piece. He composed the music for each of the instruments. Teddy was also an accomplished musician and had a great love for baseball. Needless to say it has cast a sad cloud over our very close knit group. We will do all we can to help Lefty and Nan deal with this tragedy. Our winter group is like family to me. I celebrate all of life's great moments with them and I share their sorrow and sadness when life deals a bad hand.

I finally heard back from the doctor's office in Birmingham. I have an appointment on April 15th. Phil will be in Palm Springs for his hard court nationals, so he won't be able to accompany me, which I know he'll fight me tooth and nail on. It's important for him to play. Maybe if there is a cancellation I can get in sooner. We'll see.
