Phil has played five singles matches in four days. One on Saturday, two on Sunday and two today. Not to mention the four doubles matches he played in three days between Thursday and Saturday. A true testament that the fitness workouts with Geoff are paying big dividends. Today were the quarters and semis of the singles.
In his quarterfinal match this morning, Phil lost the first set 6-3. He was down a break in the second set, only to break back. He had noticed his opponent kept holding his arm in pain throughout the match. Phil knew that if he could hold on and win the second set, the guy wouldn't be able to stay strong for a third. Phil was able to fight off three match points and get to a tiebreaker. At 2-2 in the second set tiebreaker, his opponent had to retire due to injury. A win, is a win....he was on to the semis now. As I suspected would happen, the tournament decided to play the semis this afternoon, instead of waiting to play the semis and finals tomorrow. His doubles partner, Tom, won his semifinal round too. Once again, Phil and Tom would square off. I was nervous as a could be.
The match started at 2:30 our time. I stayed busy at work until I finally heard from him around 4:45. He had won!!! 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. I actually cried tears of joy! One more match to go! The finals are scheduled for tomorrow at 12:30 EST. It'll be a nerve wracking time waiting the results but my fingers and toes will be crossed for luck! No matter the outcome, Phil has had a phenomenal tournament. Win, lose or draw, I'm so very proud of him!
