Watching and Waiting

We drove up to Orlando yesterday, not knowing exactly when Phil and Tom would play.  The ITF (International Tennis Federation) does things a little differently than the USTA.  Including making draws available with play times, in a timely fashion.

Yesterday we were able to catch the finals of some of the team events. The USA was successful in both men's and women's age groups in winning the gold medal.  Fun to watch!  Even though these are not the age groups I play in, I know many of the US players from years past.  It's nice to reconnect with them, and to make new friends.  Today I met Rita Price.  Rita is from Denver and is 91 years old.  She is playing "down" in the 85's.  She is amazing.

The USTA campus where this event is being held is unbelievable.  There are 100 courts, which 32 of them are being used for this event.  The only caveat is that this facility is in the direct
flight path of the Orlando airport.  And when I say direct, I mean direct.  It looks, feels and sounds like the planes are going to land on the courts....every 10 minutes a plane is landing.  It's crazy.  It takes some getting used to.  I guess overtime you would get immune to it.  I really feel like you could hit a high lob and nail one of the Jet Blues flying over.  I wonder if anyone has tried?

Phil had a good practice session today, and will have another one tomorrow.  Tom won his singles match today and will play again tomorrow.  Tom and Phil are seeded #8 in a 32 draw.  They play the winner of a team from Mexico and a team from Australia, who play tomorrow.  Now if looks like Phil and Tom will play on Monday.  The weather is nice....hot and windy. Phil is used to it, but many of the foreign players are struggling with the heat and humidity.

Until they play, I'm enjoying watching matches from all the different age groups.  Very inspiring.  I'll post more once they get playing.  Can't wait!
