Phil loves tennis history. Given the opportunity to play where so may great champions of the game have played and he if could only play on one leg, he would still go. Oh wait....he is doing that...he is basically playing on one leg...still. Not too much has changed from Seattle.
When we came home he went straight to Dr. Spain. He confirmed the small Baker's cyst in the back of his knee was a by product of the torn meniscus. Long story short, the over all pain Phil is feeling isn't so much a meniscus problem, but more of a "bone on bone" arthritic problem. We are both confused as to how that could appear so quickly from just a quick pop in his knee in late June. He has never experienced knee issues in his life. However, the X-rays, ultrasounds and MRI's confirm what Dr. Spain is saying. Phil just wants to get through this week of playing doubles only, so the cyst was drained and a quick shot of cortisone was injected right before he left. He's hoping that will hold him through the 4 matches he and Tom Smith will need to come home with the gold ball! Their first match is on Friday.
I stayed home this trip to hold down the fort. Our season has not started, but we are slowly seeing signs....a few early arrivals as the weather cools down in the northern states, car carriers dropping off cars, and fall league seasons ramping up.
I have made the decision to get back on the court and start playing again. A year has come and gone since the stroke and it's time. Fran asked me to play doubles in the National 50 Clays in West Palm Beach in late October.
So that I don't completely embarrass myself, Phil has been hitting with me and I have working out 3 days a week to improve my strength and cardio. You don't realize what a year off can do to your body and your game. I'm so sore sometimes that bending down is nearly impossible AND getting back up is not even an option. I'm hitting overheads and serves that actually bounce on my side of the court first, before going over the net...REALLY?? Phil keeps me in check and reminds me to keep this all in perspective and most importantly make it fun!!!
I'll post Phil and Tom's results beginning tomorrow.
