Waiting to hear from Phil with his results can be excruciatingly tough. When I don't hear from him in what I think should be a timely fashion, I begin to worry and wonder what the heck is going on. All the different scenarios play through my mind. Usually they are all unwarranted, because there is a reason...the match started later than scheduled is the normal cause. Luckily today he was right on time with a call around 6:30, having started at 5:00 my time.
He and Marty won against a very good team 7-6(12-10), 6-3. According to Phil it was a great match with lots of unbelievable shot making. The opponents had set points in the first set, but Phil and Marty were able to hold them off to finally win the set. After a couple of early breaks back and forth in the second set, they were able to break for Phil to serve out the match, winning with an ace from Phil on match point. That's always a confidence builder when that happens!
The semis finals are tomorrow and once again they will play against a extremely tough team that has had success in years past. Phil thinks he and Marty make a good team, but knows they will have to continue playing very well to keep advancing. Phil has a certain confidence in his voice that I recognize and love to hear when it gets to this point in a big tournament. Temperatures are nearing 100 degrees in Palm Springs. I think his decision to just play doubles was a wise one.
I started working with a new trainer today to begin my journey back. Having been somewhat sedentary since my stroke (only teaching these past few months), I am starting with a lot of core work and stretching. I already know that tomorrow will be very difficult to walk...my legs haven't seen a lunge in months...ouch!! I have to start somewhere, and here I go!
I haven't seen the match times for Phil and Marty tomorrow. I imagine they will play mid afternoon again. I will post as soon as he calls!
