Fran and I arrived in Palm Beach Gardens yesterday afternoon. It wasn't until we got here, got settled in our hotel room and watched the local news, that we discovered there was a tropical storm, soon to be hurricane, looming south of here. The playing conditions today were very tricky. Winds were easily blowing 25 miles an hour. It was partly sunny throughout most of the day, so the combination of the wind and sun was quite interesting.
I found a way, some how, only by the grace of God, to win today. I lost the first set 6-4, won the second 6-3 on sheer grit, then closed out the third 6-2, by playing marginally better. Something has happened to me with my confidence in singles. I play like I've never played a match in my life. I play with no confidence, I play tentative, and am completely incapable of hitting a forehand. Unfreakin' believable. It's not fun. Even when I win, it's not fun to play that way. I was fine in doubles. Played great. We won our match this afternoon 6-3, 6-0. I just don't get it.
We are scheduled for singles tomorrow at 10:30, depending on what Hurricane Sandy does. The wind and rain bands are forecast to start coming in early, so we'll have to see what Mother Nature has in store for us. I think the weather is trying to match my play right now....UGLY!
