Double Whammy

I knew I had a long day of tennis ahead of me today. It's been a while since I've played three tournament matches in one day. That's what happens when you lose before the semis and feed in to the consolation.

My first singles match was at 9:30 this morning. I played Maria Nunez, who I had played first round in La Jolla last month. I finally found a player who is struggling more than me. She did not have her best day and I won easily 6-0, 6-1. She couldn't keep a ball in play and her serve was off. I was able to push enough forehands in and wait for her mistakes.

My next singles match, semis of consolation, was at 2:00. I played Kathy Vick, who I lost to in Baton Rouge in April. I just wanted to feel like I played one match well. Wishful thinking. I went down 4-0 on a combination of her good shots, but mostly my errors, and those being mostly forehand errors. I fought back to 4-3 and from there it was all downhill. I set myself up only to blow the easiest of shots. I moved well and tried my hardest, but it's just wasn't there.

On to the third match of the day, our doubles playoff for third and fourth. Our opponents were a tough team but beatable. We dropped the first set 6-3, then played better and won the second set 6-2. Fran and I were able to get a break in the third to go up 4-2, then 5-3. At 30-30 we had a great point that ended with them hitting a lucky net cord (not so lucky for us). We lost that game, then the set and match 7-5. A tough loss.

My doubles play this week definitely was better than my singles play. I'm going to take some time off, heal my body and brain and then make a plan from there. Not my best week of tennis, but it's always fun to see all the players and reconnect, and to meet new players as well. I put poor Phil through the ringer this week with all my ups and downs. He needs a vacation from this " vacation"!
