I had a whole new mindset going into today's singles match with Erin. It may sound crazy, but my goal wasn't to necessarily to win, but to come out of the match feeling like I had played and competed well. If the result was a win, then it was a bonus. I needed to play a match against a good player and play with a relaxed focus, and work on my mental strength during matches.
Erin and I played a long, three hour match. I lost the first set 7-5. I was down 2-4, serving at love-40. My forehand was still AWOL, as it has been all week, so instead of giving in to go down 2-5, I decided to skip the groundstrokes all together and just serve and volley. Low and behold it worked. I held that game, and came back to win the set 7-5. I went down a break early in the third and couldn't quite catch up. I lost the match 6-4 in the third. But I was okay with it. It actually didn't matter that I lost...a feeling I've never experienced. I realize that I am still working on getting back to the level I need in order to compete at the highest level. My fitness is improving working with Bob. My serving confidence has returned. I've returned to playing tournaments. I'll find my forehand again and I will return to top form.
Fran and I finished our doubles on a good note. We won our playoff match for third place 6-0, 6-1. We both played well and it was great way to end our week together. We're both very eager to get home tomorrow. Our day will start very early as we have 6:45 a.m flights to head home. It's been a great week in La Jolla, and a venue I'll look forward to returning to. I'll get home, rest up, heal my wrist and start getting ready for the indoors in June in Denver.
