Back in Atlanta

Phil and I flew to Atlanta this morning where Phil is playing in the Atlanta Senior Invitational. This is his first singles tournament back since his shoulder surgery. In fact this was the last tournament Phil played, before that fateful bike accident happened, a day after our return home from Atlanta last year. I know he's anxious about playing singles again, and not because of his shoulder. Thankfully he has no pain, but he does feel that he doesn't quite have full strength yet. The biggest issue with not playing for an extended time is putting yourself back on the competitive court and finding your confidence. It takes a while, and we may take our lumps with some hard losses (a la my loss a couple of weeks ago in Baton Rouge), but this is what we do, and we'll get better with each match we play.

Phil's first singles match is Thursday. The doubles draws have not been posted yet. He is playing with Bob Litwin, a great player from New York. I'm looking forward to watching Phil play. I hope my nerves can take it! I play each match with him, from the sideline. We both agree it's easier to be the one playing and not the one watching.

I'll be able to get some good workouts in to get ready for my national hard court, coming up in a couple of weeks.
