Today was a big day for both Phil and me. I was finally getting to play my first match and Phil was playing Roscoe Tanner in the semifinals. Roscoe was seeded one, and has been the tournament headliner and in the news all week. I knew Phil was nervous playing him, but I also knew if he could get past who he was playing, he would do just fine. They were late getting on because the tournament officials waited to put their match on center court for the crowd. My match was scheduled for one. I was able to see the first set which Phil won in a tiebreaker. He played really well and was able to stick to his plan of moving Roscoe around the court and body punching him. Roscoe's serve is big, but he missed quit a few first serves and second serves were certainly returnable. I could tell he was wearing down and Phil was settling in for the kill. My match was called and I wasn't able to see the finish.
I played a very nice player from Baton Rouge, Elizabeth Chasteen. I was a little nervous, which is always good, but my nerves continued on a little longer than I'd like. I felt like I was rushing and trying to do more than I really needed to. I won the first set 6-1 and we were on serve at 1-2 when I finally felt myself relax into a rhythm. I also had gotten news that Phil had won the second set 6-2. I was proud and relieved for him. I won my second set 6-2. We are both in the finals tomorrow. I play at 9:00 and Phil plays at 11:00. My final is against Kathy Vick, a good player from Lubbock, Texas. We should have a tough, hard fought match. Phil plays a big lefty from the Washington, DC area. I think he'll match up well with with his opponent. This will be the third lefty out of the four matches that he has played.
We had a great time at the LSU baseball game last night. It was a beautiful evening to be at the game. Ricky and Susie have just been wonderful as hosts. We've had great food, fun evenings of cards and great support at the matches. All our Baton Rouge/Gonzales friends have been to all our matches and cheering us on. We've got one more day to get through. Tonight Ricky and Phil have called in Clay for reinforcements at the card table. Good news is we get Wanda on our team. Girls Rule!
