USA Wins!

Today was a great day for the USA. The men started out playing this morning with Tom playing #2 singles. He lost the first set and was down 4-1, before fighting back to win 6-2 in the third against a strong Austrian player. Phil then took the court to play #1 singles. He had a tough first set that he lost in a tiebreaker. He wasn't able to get his mo-jo going and lost the second set easily. Once again it came down to doubles. Phil and Tom are a phenomenal team. Their opponents came out swinging and our guys were quickly down 6-2, 3-0. I thought it was over. They stayed patient and never quit trying. They were able to break back, hang in there and win the second set 7-5. During the end of the second set, Tom´s wife Debbie arrived. She had just flown in to spend the second week with us. A few minutes later Fran, Mariana and Mary come over too. They had just beat the Czech Republic to win the Margaret Court Cup! We had a strong USA contingent to cheer Tom and Phil on in the third set. They turned it up a notch and won the third set 6-1 to take fifth place out for 24 teams in the Austria Cup. I was proud of the way they hung in there and especially proud of how Phil bounced back from his disappointing singles play.

The girls were so excited about their victory and rightfully so! Mariana won her match 7-5 in the third and Gretchen clinched the match with a convincing 6-1, 6-1 victory. The Czech Republic were the defending champs and very tough team to beat!

I´ve had a great time watching and cheering, but now I´m ready to play. I hit with Bill today for about and hour and Mary Dailey and I got a good hit in again this afternoon after the matches finished. I´m sunbaked and tired from all the week´s excitement. Tomorrow we´ll take a 10:00 shuttle to the north part of the island. It´s about a 90 minute bus ride to where we´re going. Probably will have our first match Monday, maybe Tuesday. I´m also excited because Jim Davidson and Trish will arriving in the next day or so to spend the week watching us play. How awesome is that!

I´m not sure what the internet service will be, but I´ll be posting as often as possible. There´s more to come!!!
