Rain in Spain...Again

We woke up to rain this morning....which threw our whole day into a tizzy. After breakfast we waited in the lobby for the official word from the ITF on what the schedule would be. Finally we were bused over to Palmanova around 12:30, only to be brought back because of more rain. We hung out in the lobby until about 3:30, before heading back over to the courts. The matches got started about 4:00 with Tom playing the first singles on at number two. He came out very strong and won the first set easily 6-1. He was tested in the second, but won 6-4. Phil went on next to play the number 1 singles. Because of the rain and lack of warmup courts nobody got a very long warmup. Phil got up a break early, but ended up losing the first set 7-5. In the second set he was still playing well, but the Swede was coming up with big shots at just the right time. Phil had a two break lead in the second and couldn´t hold on. He lost in a second set tie breaker, which evened the overall match to one all. It was coming down to doubles. After a short break and court grooming, the doubles started. The daylight was quickly going as the sun was setting behind the mountain. It was after seven when they started. Phil and Tom won the first set 6-3, then rolled on in the second to win the match 6-1. USA wins 2-1. They finished just as the lights were coming on and right before the last bus was leaving back to the hotel.

Tomorrow the USA plays Austria for the 5-6 place. The girls had a thrilling match at Santa Ponsa against France. They won both the singles. The doubles wasn´t played due to lateness. They will now play the Czech Republic for the cup.

It´s late now and I´m bushed from all the cheering and spectating.
