I'm Exhausted
The only physical activity I had today was to warm Phil up this morning for his 9:00 match. We hit for about 30 minutes. After sitting through his three matches today, I am absolutely worn out! He won his first match in short order, 6-2, 6-0. This morning the winds were about 10-15 mph. By the time he started his semifinal match at 1:00, the winds were gusting to 30 mph. I told Phil, that when we have winds that strong in Destin, there's a name attached, like Tropical Storm Renee or Hurricane Lance! It was the most brutal conditions I've ever witnessed. Phil's opponent and doubles partner, Mario, started out playing very focused and consistent. Phil had a tough service game early and was broken, and went on to lose the set 6-3. In the second set Phil attacked more, and Mario was having real trouble with not only the wind, but the bright mid day sun on the north side. Phil was able to break early, hold on and win the second set 6-2. The winds seemed to just get stronger with each gust. Chairs were blowing over, trash kept blowing on the court and balls that were destined for the fences fell in. Phil lost his serve the first game of the third set and Mario held to go up 2-0. Phil held his serve, then broke back to even it up to 2 all. After that, Phil used the wind to his advantage, kept attacking as much as he could and went on win the match 6-3 in the third. I was a nervous wreck by the end of the match. I now know exactly what my Mom and Dad felt like all those years watching all the tennis matches I played! After a half hour break, Phil and Mario played their semis doubles match and won 6-4, 6-1. Phil plays his finals tomorrow at 1o:00 against Bill Roach, who he beat a couple of weeks ago in the finals of the National Indoors in Boise. The doubles final will follow. I plan on getting a good nights sleep so I can wake up and be ready for another day. I hope my heart can take it!
