My only job today was to play one singles match. I was really looking forward to playing Fran again. We've had some good matches in the past. She hits a ball that sets up nicely for me. I couldn't have been any more looser or relaxed going into the match. I had all day to play, so I was determined not to rush any shots. With Fran, patience is a must, because she just doesn't miss. I started the match serving and had a service game that must have gone 10 deuces, before I finally won my serve. I was patient, but I knew I was in for a long day! There were very few free points from unforced errors from either of us. The average point lasted at least 15-20 rallies. Side to side, deep, short, high and low balls. I eked out the first set 6-4. I knew the match was a long ways from being over. Three and a half hours later we shook hands with Fran winning the final two sets 6-3, 6-3. It was one of those matches where even though I lost, I felt great about the way I played, the way I moved and the way I felt strong even after the match was over. She hit a few more better shots than me at crucial times. I'm right on the cusp of winning against some of the top players. It just motivates me to work harder, both on and off the court. My next adventure is the Intersectionals in Naples in November where I'll be captain of the 45's Florida team, competing against other sections of the USTA in a team competition.
Thanks to everyone for their continued support and comments! Special thanks to Renee and Jerry for holding down the fort at Hidden Dunes while I'm away, and to my Mom for taking such great care of Augie and Chatum for me! Without all of their help, I'd never be able to make these trips!! I'll be packing up tonight for my long journey home tomorrow.
