You know, sometimes you look back at your day and are able to see all you accomplished, or didn't, in that particular day. I keep a mental checklist of things to do, and usually a written too. I hate leaving anything out or not completing all my tasks.
Today’s list included the usual tournament mentality of “have fun, play well, let the game come to you, enjoy the moment, focus, blah blah blah...” I can safely say that all the aforementioned were accomplished.
What I didn’t intend to happen today, was to play two sets of doubles and two sets of singles and NOT WIN ONE FRICKIN’ GAME! 6-0, 6-0 in doubles and 6-0, 6-0 in singles. It’s history making for me. I’ve played tournament tennis for 47 years, and I don’t think I’ve ever lost two matches in the same day without winning ONE game.
I’m going to say all the cliche things that try to make it sound better...every game went to deuce, the score isn’t an indicator of how the actual match was played...some is true, but seriously? 😳 The opponents in both matches are certainly beatable, and by no means that much better than me, (or us) We(I) could not pull out the big points at the right time. It just shows that I can drill and practice until the cows come home. But there is absolutely no substitute for playing matches and being in a pressure situation.
The positive (and yes, I’m looking at the Gatorade half full) is that I am swinging freely at the ball. Now I have to marry my free swing and positive mind set, to match play. It will come back.
Fran lost her semis singles in a tough match and will play a playoff for 3 & 4 tomorrow morning. She and I will play our doubles play off after that. One more match to go, and you better believe it will not be a history making day. Games will be won!
Thankfully we have a beautiful retreat to return to at the end of the day.
Sometimes I wish I drank. 🍻🍷🍹🥃
Instead I’ll have some cream cheese with all those “bagels”today. 🤪
