The new year has brought me into a new age group. I age up into the 50's. It's always nice to be the youngest in the age group, but it certainly doesn't make it any easier. All the good players that were in the 45's with me, join me in the 50's. It's a vicious cycle, but it keeps it fun and challenging.
I'm leaving in a few hours to catch a plane to West Palm Beach to play at BallenIsles. This is a category II national, but by the looks of the strength in the draw, it could be a world championship! I'm using this tournament as a barometer to see where I'm at in terms of mental and physical training, and what I need to work on. I haven't competed since August, so I'm feeling a little apprehensive, but I have to start somewhere. Get back on the horse. I just hope I haven't jumped on a bucking bronco!! Fran and I are playing doubles together, and that I'm really looking forward to. She is so nice and so fun and easy to play with. We're also rooming together which is an added bonus. We both like to eat early, go to bed early and get up early...should work out perfectly.
It's always tough leaving work this time of year, with the winter guests in full swing. But I'm leaving it in the capable hands of Jerry, Renee, Phil and some gracious volunteers to help out around the edges as needed. I still say I have the best job in the world, with the best staff, and best clientele that ever was. They all make it easy for me to do what I do.
I'll be posting daily with match results and maybe a few pictures if I get super creative. My first singles match is tomorrow (Wednesday) at 1:00 with doubles later in the afternoon.
