The day after your last tournament match is always a great day. Sleeping in, no pressure...just hanging out watching other matches and maybe getting a light hit in just to get loose. That's exactly how our day was today, except for a slight unexpected surprise for me.
Last night Phil asked if I would mind if we met an older gentleman and his wife on the porch for coffee at the Germantown clubhouse this morning. Mr. Goodman had followed Phil through his playing years at Germantown, and I knew it would be important to Phil. Little did I know it was a ploy to make sure I was at the courts this morning to be awarded the Bunny Vosters Sportswoman Award. I was blown away! This award is awarded annually during the National Senior Women's Grass Court Championships to the player who best exemplifies both sportswoman qualities as well as excellence of play that Bunny Vosters embodied. Each year the players at these championships vote to choose a player who merits this award. I've won a national championship and a world championship, but I think this award means more to me than either of them because it is voted on by my friends and peers. Winning championships is an amazing achievement, but to know that I am respected and liked by my fellow competitors for my actions on and off the court is quite rewarding.
Phil and I were able to hit on the clay courts for about an hour today. There was a short delay during the final matches today because of light rain. We hung around the courts watching a chatting with friends. Mary Dailey won double gold in the 35 and 45 doubles, while Trish Riddell won double gold in the 35 singles and doubles (with Mary). It was fun to watch and share in their joy. We have one more day of hanging out tomorrow before we leave on Sunday. Phil will go back to Columbus and I will head back to Hidden Dunes. Our separation will only be for a couple of weeks. He will be back in Destin to spend the month of August. We've had a wonderful time together.
