They say what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. I should be superwoman by now from watching Phil play...I think he's trying to kill me with anxiety attacks by making his matches as stressful as possible! He played the number 8 seed, who is the number one Swiss player, and a very nice person. I could tell from the warmup that Phil was hitting very well and was feeling it. He served well, moved forward, attacked...everything he likes to do in a match. I think he's finally over the surface issue and just playing like Phil likes to play. He won the first set 7-5. In the second set, I could tell his back was bothering him some, and just not moving like he was. He lost the second set 6-3. While the court monitors groomed and watered the court for the third set, it cooled his opponent off. Phil came out strong, broke early and stayed on top. He won the third set 6-2. Gosh, I don't know how many more three setters I can take. He and Tom came back this afternoon and beat a very good Australian team. I was able to watch the first set and part of the second, before I had to take off for my doubles. They won 6-4, 6-2. He and Tom are such a treat to watch...great hands, great movement. Jim and Trish have been so much fun to have around and have been such great cheerleaders for all of the USA contingent.
When I got back to Font de Sa Cala for my doubles match, Mariana was still on the court playing her singles. She won a tough match 6-4, 7-6. We didn't get on to play our doubles until 6:00. Luckily we were able to make short work of our opponents. They were nice girls from Portugal and we won 6-1, 6-2. Tomorrow Phil has his quarterfinal singles at noon against an unseeded player from Denmark. This guy is very tough...a former World Champion who should be a top seed here. Phil will have his work cut out for him for sure. I hope my nerves can take it! Phil and Tom have the number one seeds in the afternoon for doubles. Mariana and I play two Australian girls that we should match up well against.
It's going to be another fun day of awesome tennis in Mallorca! Does it get any better?
