The day got off to a good start with Bill Roach winning his first cup match ever against Romania. Bill hustled to every ball, was patient and able to win handily 6-1, 6-1. Phil then took the court in the number one position to face a big, burly former Davis Cup player for Romania, who had been teammates with Ion Tiriac and Illie Nastase back in the day. About 40 lbs ago you could tell this guy was a player! Phil won the first set 6-1, then had a hard time breaking the big guy's serve, but was able to play to a tiebreaker in the second set and won 7-6. Tom and Phil went on to win the doubles to take the first match 3-0. I was able to warm Tom up for half an hour early this morning, then I hit with Larry for about an hour this afternoon. He is fighting a hamstring pull, so he's been laying low. He will be in the line up tomorrow against Turkey to test it out. Bill will play at #1, with Larry at #2 then Phil and Tom for doubles. The real matches (competition) begins on Thursday.
We just ran into Mary Dailey in the lobby, and the girls beat Estonia today 3-0 and will face Sweden tomorrow.
After returning from the matches, the guys and I walked down the beachwalk to the same restaurant Phil and I went to yesterday. We hadn't eaten all day and needed food quick. Pizza and Coke Lights saved the day for us all.
The weather today was just beautiful. Brilliant sunshine, a little breezy and sometimes even chilly while just sitting. I´m having a great time watching all the matches and being able to hit with the guys as needed. It´s good for them, and great for me!
