A First for Me

I played my first round match finally today. I won easily 6-0, 6-1. I played well and was able to hit enough balls to feel like I was in a groove. I ended the match on a good backhand approach shot and volley winner. It's always nice to win a match on a winner rather than the opponent's error. Mom and I enjoyed a nice lunch on the porch at the club today. It's so beautiful to sit and look out at all the courts and imagine all the great players in history who have played at Merion. Susan and I had an easy doubles match....a first happened for both of us. We had a "golden set" the first set. That means we won every point! On grass that doesn't happen very often. There's always a fluke bounce or errant return. Susan said she thought about it after the first couple of games, but didn't want to say anything to jinx us. I only thought about it when we switched at 5-0. I told her I didn't think we'd lost a point yet, and we hadn't. We broke at 0-40 and won the set. Of course after having such a strong first set, we proceeded to lose my serve the first game of the second set on a couple of net cords. The girls were nice club players, but we were just too strong. I play singles tomorrow at noon and doubles after that. Both matches will be tough, but this is what I've been training for.

Retsy and Belmar came over from Germantown where the 65's, 75's and 85's are playing. Retsy won her match and she and Belmar won their doubles. It's so much fun to see everyone. The camaraderie amongst all the players is great. There's a good chance of rain tomorrow. I hope it holds off until after my singles. The courts are playing perfect to suit my game.

Lance said that he enjoyed playing with the girls the other day but Chatum is stuck up. Auggie likes to play and is more fun. Oh one more thing. He is not to fond of your treats. He rudely spit it out but your girls found it and inhaled it. He is only a little spoiled. Great playing today.
