Keep Off the Grass

After much thought and soul searching I've decided to not play the grass court nationals in Philadelphia. I felt like I was still struggling with my fitness level on court. My breathing has continued to be labored during my workouts. In addition I felt like I was putting too much pressure on myself to "hurry up" and get ready for the tournament, which in my mind translated to being tournament ready in short time. Phil and I talked at length, weighing the pros and cons. I just couldn't come up with enough "pros" to make the decision to go. Thankfully since we've made the decision, I feel much more at ease with my practices and feel like I can properly prepare for my next tournament. I'm not exactly sure when that will be. It quite possibly could be the National Public Parks tournament in St. Louis in early August. Phil and I both can play in this Category II national. It's so important for us to have a goal to work toward. We both plan to play our fall Category I nationals in September and October.

A smattering of tar balls have appeared on our beaches. We've also been in a very rainy pattern the past few days. With the holiday weekend approaching we need to have clear weather and clean beaches!

I think you have made the right decision. For one thing it is beastly hot here (in the 90's) and although that might not be the case by the time of the tournament, that's not what the forecasters are saying. It's just not worth it to take the chance before you're ready. We'll miss seeing you though but hey, there's always next year!
